SEPTEMBER 2004

Callum is going from strength to strength with his crawling.  He’s really mastered it now and has got much faster… although the really fast crawls seem to be when you are not looking.  One minute he’s there, then you go get the post that has just been delivered, turn around and he’s at the other side of the room.  Babies either know how to hide their skills from sight, or they have a secret way of teleporting themselves across rooms!

This month Callum has also confirmed our suspicions that he is going to be a climber.  He may not be able to walk unaided yet, but he knows how to climb!  He is into everything.

We are continuing with the baby-signing and we shocked when he did his first sign so soon after starting…

Me and Callum had gone to the caravan with my Mum and Dad while Shaun stayed at home to do a bit of work on the house.  Whilst eating his lunch one day, Callum started whinging putting his hands together and twisting them in a strange way.  Me and my parents watched him, wondering what he was doing, then suddenly it dawned on me… babies first signing attempts will often be a version of what you are doing and not always strictly accurate… I showed my Mum and Dad the sign for ‘nappy change’ and asked them if they thought that was what he was trying to do.  They instantly agreed.  We checked his nappy, and sure enough, it was dirty.  We changed his bottom and gave him lots of praise and cuddles, and then he went on to finish his meal without making a fuss.  So, it’s a start – it has also made us more determined to carry on, although we know that developments may be slow at first.

The baby speak is also coming on.  He now makes understandable sounds like “door”, “what’s that” and “dog”.  We know it’s not real speech as such, but you can understand him, and it’s not just us, other members of our family and friends often understand what he is trying to say.

Two more teeth have appeared at the top, he was a little unsettled when they were coming through – but nothing too noticeable.  The breastfeeding is coninuing for now... but he is a biter!  I am having to be firm and stop the feed if he really bites hard.  It seems to do the trick, for a few days at least!

We are sill continuing with ‘nap night’.  Callum still seems fine with it.  I am sleeping better now on the night that he’s away, but I still do miss him loads.  Every Monday night I tell Shaun that I want to go up to my Mum and Dads' to bring him home… but I resist the urge.  Deep down I know that it is as good for Callum as it is for us.  If ever we need him to stay with my Mum and Dad in and emergency, we know he will settle.

Callum has not had tonsillitis again since that last bout at the end of July.  We decided to take him to the clinic again on the 22nd September to get him weighed just to make sure that he did have a better increase when he wasn’t poorly.  Sure enough he had put on more weight, only 1oz short of a pound.  He is still underweight, although you wouldn’t think it to see him, but at least he has started putting weight on at an increased rate.  If he can go another couple of months putting it on at this rate, he will be back to being nearer the average weight for his age.  His weight was 20lbs 3oz and his length measured 74cms, and increase of 1½cms.

The next time we will be getting Callum weighed and measured will be on his birthday on 3rd November.  We are so glad that clinic is on a Wednesday… it means that we can have his weight and length measured at exactly one year old.

Well, that’s all I’ve got to report for this month, so I’ll sign off for now.  I’ve not had chance to check this entry (or the August one) for typing errors, so ignore any goof’s… I’ll check them later.  I also hope to get some new pictures added to the site at some point this week

‘Til next time,

Amanda xXx
